With smartphones, it’s now easier than ever to stay connected. Use of this technology, however, can come with a hefty cell phone bill. Internet is available on cruise ships, but is often very slow and can be expensive. So what are you to do when you want to stay connected while on your Europe cruise?
If you’re like me and can’t stay off the grid for too long, wait until you reach the port and use your iPhone, Blackberry or Android device to connect to the Internet. WiFi is available almost at every port and is often free. Needless to say, I get very excited when I find free WiFi.
Yesterday’s #cruisechat on Twitter inspired me to write this post. The topic was on travel and technology and I got some great tips from the party on how to find free WiFi at port.
Tips on Finding Free WiFi
- Turn your Data Roaming off, but enable WiFi. This will pick up available networks in your range.
- Look for a Starbucks or McDonalds as they usually have free WiFi.
- Ask the crew where to find free WiFi. They more than likely would know as they’d want to keep in touch with family and friends back home!
Do you have any tips on finding free WiFi that I can add to the list?

You have some great tips here. Yes, the crew can always help you find the cheapest and the best place to get connected.
Thanks for stopping by, Sailor!
Great information! I often get asked about keeping in touch with home with complaints about how expensive roaming is.
Thanks, Mike! Nobody likes ‘em, those roaming charges! Fortunately, the smartphone and WiFi make it easier to stay in touch.
